Keith hanging out in Hokkaido

Eyebrow like The Rock

I am a Korean-American (a gyopo). I grew up in New York and attended Stuyvesant High School and Binghamton University (short stint at University at Buffalo too). Immediately after graduation I went to teach English in Korea for one year. I went to live in Japan for two years and worked at KoreanClass101.com and became the Director of Operations for the podcasting company. I came back to Korea saved some money and partied for a few years. I saved up enough to quit my jobs and work on a few ambitious projects. Currently I am in working on http://seoulistic.com, a Korean culture and Korea travel tip site. Wish me luck!

    Hi Keith,

I am one of your fans from KClass101. I started learning Korean about 6 months ago, so you probably had already left by then, but I do enjoy your podcasts from then quite and bit, and they’ve helped me (a total newb) into speaking Korean a little better. I enjoyed your witty banter and easy-going explanations.

Wishing you the best in Korea. Me? I’d like to visit, but may not be able to do so for a while. Hopefully by then I won’t sound like such a newb. :)

Hi Doug, thanks for leaving a comment. I’m glad you enjoyed my previous work :)
I’m not planning on teaching Korean via podcast again for a while, but we’ll see what the future has in store!

hi, I was wondering if you could help me out here.. I’m planning on moving to Seoul soon. I’m a little worried that I have no Korean friends besides family friends. could you give me some pointers on how to make friends when you don’t know anyone? also some good places to live?

    • lynnyoochun September 26, 2012 at 8:14 AM #

I second that cause me and my friend are planning to go to seoul soon. Keith any suggestions?

      • Keith Kim September 26, 2012 at 9:02 AM #

Sure, but could you be more specific? :)

    • Keith Kim September 26, 2012 at 9:02 AM #

Sorry for the late reply! I think making friends anywhere is the same everywhere. Just gotta put yourself out there :) Join an interest group, or go out and meet lots of people through friends.

What kind of place do you like to live? Really depends on what you’re lookign for

Let’s see..I like an area that’s lively but not trashy.. with a good indie music scene..not bouji but not ghetto either. oh and it needs to be safe enough for me to go on a walk whenever.

Hey Keith! I really love your work! Thanks for the all the helpful tips. Especially for me cause I am also a Gyopo Korean. I immigrated when I was 5 and I pretty much had to relearn Korean. So as a Gyopo Korean I felt kinda lost not knowing where I belong but then I found that we aren’t too rare and there are more of us than I thought.
Thanks to you, I have Gyopo pride!!!
